The second GEMSEC Annual Workshop will be held at the Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories of the University of Washington, at San Juan Island, on August 24-28, 2009.

Agenda
There are more than 15 invited talks presented by international speakers and GEMSEC investigators combined with poster presentations by students and post-docs, with ample time for discussions. Invited talks will be given in the morning and at night. Poster sessions will be in the late afternoon. There will be free time in the afternoons for recreation and discussions. A detailed schedule will be available on the GEMSEC web site ~ August 15.

Abstracts
Every workshop attendee (invited speakers and poster presenters) needs to prepare an abstract. The abstract should follow the example in attached, and should have a title (capital letters), authors and affiliations, 300-350 word text, one attractive figure (a must), and acknowledgements, plus references (3 or less). Please email abstract to Dr. Ersin Emre Oren (eeoren@u.washington.edu) but keep the file size less than 1MB. Click here for an abstract template (GEMSEC members, please use this template).

Invited Talks
These presentations are 40 minutes, including the Q/A period. There will be computer projector and high resolution screen available for presentations and poster boards at the workshop.

Posters Presentations and Awards
Every student, graduate and undergraduate, and post-doctoral researcher attending the workshop is required to present a poster. Posters (36" x 42") need to be prepared following a Center-specific format, see the poster template. There will be awards for those selected as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in poster presentations, and their work will be displayed at the GEMSEC web-site. Dr. Ersin Emre Oren has further information on posters (eeoren@u.washington.edu).

Accommodations
There are dormitories, cottages (4 people) and special rooms. The sleeping accommodations will be decided according to the attendees’ needs (upon registration). Travel
In state invited speakers & attendees:
1.You may ride in one of the vans that will depart from University of Washington campus (C12 Parking Lot by Roberts Hall).  Vans will leave for FHL at 8:30AM on August 24.
2. You are also welcome to drive to FHL in your vehicle.  See also the links provided by FHL for driving directions and by Washington State Ferries for ferry schedule (Anacortes/Friday Harbor).

Out of state invited speakers & attendees:
1. There will be airport pick-up service from SeaTac International Airport. Due to constraints of the ferry schedule (Anacortes/Friday Harbor), we can only provide airport pick-up service for arrivals on August 23. Invited speakers only: Please contact Ms. Anita Simmons for special pick-up arrangements, or need help with deciding on an appropriate flight. Please also contact Ms. Anita Simmons (anitas@u.washington.edu) or Dr. Hanson Fong (hfong@u.washington.edu) for general pick-up arrangement.

2. Alternatively, you can arrange a connecting flight to FHL with one of the small airlines (e.g. Kenmore Air, http://www.kenmoreair.com/index.php?flash_loaded=1) or arrange a rental car at SeaTac International Airport.  If you are driving from the airport, simply follow signs to I-5, then take I-5 north toward Seattle.  See the links provided by FHL for further driving directions and by Washington State Ferries for ferry schedule (Anacortes/Friday Harbor).

Note: Workshop organizers will not be able to provide travel expenses to those who will drive on their own to FHL, rental car or otherwise.

Registration
Everyone attending and/or presenting posters/talks has to register for the workshop; Please see the registration form at: https://catalysttools.washington.edu/webq/survey/hfong/39924. Deadline is August 10, 2009. Registration fee is $250 for poster presenting students and postdocs and $500 for faculty and industrial professionals per person, which includes accommodations, food, drinks, and workshop material.

Internet Access
There will be several computers with internet access at the workshop, free for attendees, plus the computer terminals at the FHL libraries will be accessible (for everyone) for 24-hrs.  If you want to connect from your own laptop, please obtain permission from FHL staff.

Recreation Activities
San Juan Island is a haven for outdoor activities, including biking, fishing, hiking, whale watching, sailing, boating, kayaking, etc. So, you may bring along your appropriate gear! You can make your own arrangements for activities and/or join an organized excursion to be arranged at the beginning of the workshop.
