59th Annual Alfred A. Strauss Lecture

Fabrizio Michelassi, MD
Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor of Clinical Surgery
Chairman of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College
Surgeon-in-Chief, New York - Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center

"Going Global: U.S. Academic Medical Centers’ Involvement Abroad"

Over the past 15 years, several U.S. academic medical centers have engaged in educational, research and clinical activities abroad.  The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has opened a transplant center in Palermo, Italy; Weill Cornell has built a brand new medical school in Doha, Qatar, and has recently graduated the first medical school class; Harvard Medical International will soon start to build a hospital in Dubai; and a number of additional U.S. institutions are in the process of developing international strategies.  The challenges and opportunities of this strategy are still not completely known.  Will this effort lead to a few truly global institutions or will it just distract them away from the traditional core values?

Lecture is at 4:00 p.m., in Hogness Auditorium (room A-420), UW Health Sciences Center, 1959 NE Pacific St., Seattle. Event is free and open to the public.
