Message from Dean Thomas Baillie
Welcome
to the UW School of Pharmacy website. I am Tom Baillie, Dean of
the School.
As you peruse our web pages and many links, I sincerely
hope you sense that our faculty and staff are dedicated to our overall
mission of excellence in generating, disseminating and preserving knowledge,
and providing service to the community.
As an integral part of a Health Sciences Center of
a major tier 1 public research institution, the School is dedicated to
maximizing human health and well-being by educating pharmacy professionals
and scientists, and advancing care of patients. The School is also committed
to promoting collaboration, diversity of thought, and mutual respect.
As a School of Pharmacy, we strive to meet our specialized missions to:
-
Prepare PharmD professional students for entry
into a lifelong career in the profession of pharmacy as compassionate,
innovative providers of optimal pharmaceutical care, broadly defined
as health care services, health promotion, and disease prevention
activities that ensure medications are used effectively, safely and
in a cost-efficient manner to improve a patient's well-being and quality
of life;
-
Prepare MS and PhD graduate students to become
accomplished scientists who are experts and leaders in drug discovery
and development, and in pharmaceutical outcomes research to improve
decision-making regarding pharmaceutical therapy and policy e.g.,
the Program in Drug Interactions and the
Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research and Policy Program (PORPP);
-
Conduct pioneering research in basic science, translational
science, clinical science, and pharmaceutical health outcomes and
policy that leads to understanding about drug action and disposition,
to innovative drug products, and to effective clinical practices and
public health policies thatadvance human healthcare;
-
Promote lifelong learning of pharmacists, and other
health professionals and scientists, by facilitating opportunities
for postgraduate and continuing education;
-
Provide the public and its health systems with
information (e.g., pharmacogenetics) to optimize the therapeutic use
of drugs and reduce the risk of adverse drug events; and
-
Promote interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare
through innovative educational, research, and service programs, such
as our joint PharmD/Physician's Assistant program, certificate programs
in Geriatric Pharmacy and Pharmacy Business Management in partnership
with the UW School of Business, and in partnership with the other
health science schools through the Health
Sciences Partnerships in Interdisciplinary Clinical Education (HSPICE),
the Institute for Public
Health Genetics (IPHG), the Center
for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health (CEEH), and the Biomolecular
Structure and Design (BMSD) Program.
Our vision is to be recognized nationally and
internationally as a leader in pharmacy education and scholarship that
partners with others in society to promote the discovery and development
of pharmaceuticals, and their appropriate public provision and use.
