Fellowships & Awards
The University of Washington supports and recognizes student public service and leadership work through several fellowship and scholarship programs. The Carlson Center directly administers the following Fellowships & Awards:
Robert Lee Ellis Civic Fellowship
Designed for incoming students, Ellis Fellows are selected on the basis of financial need, dedication towards service, personal growth, and leadership development, and ability to make a 4-year commitment toward fulfilling Fellowship expectations. Ellis Fellows are selected in the first week of Fall Quarter and awarded annual scholarships throughout four years, growing from $2,000 to $5,000.
Carlson Civic Fellowship
Selected on the basis of their commitment to leadership development and community engagement, Carlson Fellows are selected in October and awarded $3000 over the course of winter and spring quarter in alignment with the fulfillment of Fellowship expectations.
Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship
Selected on the basis of a proposed public service initiative and their commitment to community engagement, Munro Fellows are selected in December and awarded from $2200 to $4500 at the beginning of winter quarter in order to support the pursuit of their proposed service initiative.
Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Award
Available to Junior or Senior undergraduate students, the Carlson Leadership Award recognizes individual students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, provided outstanding leadership in the community, and who are committed to continued creative civic participation with a $2500 scholarship and recognition at the annual Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership.
Mary Gates Leadership Scholarships
In addition to our directly administered programs, Carlson Center staff are involved with the selection of Mary Gates Leadership Scholarships. Available to full-time undergraduate students each quarter, these scholarships encourage students to develop their leadership abilities through devoting time to the pursuit of an activity or project of interest that allows the expansion of leadership capacity through practical experience, personal reflection, and community interaction with peers and mentors. Two-quarter ($4,000) and three-quarter ($6,000) scholarships are available.
