Fauna of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands

The volcanic nature of the Kuril Islands has led to the development of highly acidic soils throughout the archipelago. As a result, the preservation of faunal materials is often not very good. Nevertheless, a significant amount of faunal remains (both worked and unworked) were recovered from Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.

Not suprisingly, the fauna recovered from the Kuril Islands themselves seems to be mostly marine mammal remains, while those from Sakhalin tend to be more diversified. Taxonomic lists of the different types of fauna can be accessesed by clicking on the appropriate animal type at the right.
