Rights-Based Programming

This distance learning course introduces staff members of (international) development agencies and NGOs to rights-based programming. A human rights-based approach is a conceptual framework for the process of human development that is normatively based on international human rights standards and operationally directed to promoting and protecting human rights. Essentially, a human rights-based approach integrates the norms, standards and principles of the international human rights system into the plans, policies and processes of programme development.

Short Course on Human Rights Law

The course provides an in-depth understanding of international human rights standards, looking at the human rights systems of organisations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OAS and the African Union. It provides a valuable insight for those working for NGOs or in government, as well as graduates, lecturers and legal or other professionals. The course features organised visits to NGOS, criminal courts and prisons.

Short Course on The Law and Practice of Human Rights Field Operations

This three month course aims to further students' understanding of the law and practice of human rights field work. The programme balances wide-ranging study with skills training for such activities as human rights monitoring, reporting, advocacy and capacity building. Close attention is paid to the modern realities of field work and participants take part in a number of visits to relevant NGO and government offices in London, with an option to visit a UN field operations.

This course will benefit potential and current staff of human rights field operations. Newcomers to the topic will gain a wide appreciation of the sector. The course will also be of assistance to headquarters staff in NGOs and intergovernmental organisations who support the work of field programmes, current and future humanitarian and development practitioners and for civilian, police and military peacekeepers.

The fee for this three month course is £2,950. The optional field visit is subject to an additional charge to cover costs.
