Each year, hundreds of children in the U.S. are injured and killed because of easy access to handguns in their homes. Suicide is the third leading cause among teenagers, and two-thirds of these suicides involve guns, usually handguns. Stolen guns are also a problem and are often involved in a majority of crimes.

The LOK-IT-UP safe storage campaign is a public awareness program about the importance of the safe storage of firearms. The campaign focuses on family and community safety and is not intended as a policy or crime prevention program, nor does it address the issue of gun control or a private citizen's right to bear arms.

LOK-IT-UP is a partnership between the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center, Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center, Public Health-Seattle & King County, the Snohomish Health District, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, and the Washington State Department of Health.
