Segregated Seattle

1939 Jewish, Black, Asian Maps

Sociologist Paul Hatt mapped the residential patterns of Seattle's minority communities in the downtown and central neighborhoods of Seattle using data collected in the 1939 WPA Seattle Residential Survey. These detailed maps show the overlapping concentration of Jewish families as well as Blacks, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos in the segregated Central District which would become more and more tightly segregated in the decades that followed.
