Harborview Ethics Forum

Previously part of the “Ethics Education Series” at the University of Washington’s Department of Bioethics & Humanities, the Harborview Ethics Forum is put on by Harborview Medical Center’s (HMC) Ethics Committee each month with different speakers invited to present on ethics topics. It is designed to educate clinicians, researchers, students, and trainees about the ethical dimensions of the research and clinical enterprises of interest to the UW Medicine community and the general public. The forums offer an opportunity to more deeply engage, study, and reflect on these topics and to learn from experts in bioethics, law, and humanities. 

Target & Objectives

Clinicians and scientists are introduced briefly to bioethics and humanities in their education and training. HMC forums introduce clinicians, scientists, and students/trainees to the language and methods of bioethics and humanities and to the reflective practices of both disciplines. This allows attendees to better address ethical issues in clinical care, human subjects research, classroom, and lab environments

Overall Objectives:

1) to provide a review of new and ongoing ethical issues in the basic and health sciences

2) to reflect on the human dimensions of medicine and clinical care (story-telling, history, compassion, grief, etc.)

3) to introduce inter-disciplinary perspectives on issues in bioethics and the medical humanities and ask attendees about their changes as a result of the learning.

CME Accreditation

The University of Washington School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Washington School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. (Each session is 1.0 credits)

*UW learners have a new process to claim CME credits via text for each meeting. This process is time sensitive and credits must be claimed within an hour of the event.
